[EN] Leen Van Dommelen (BE, 1987) is a performance and visual artist based in Brussels. She studied sculpture at La Cambre Brussels, and graduated in 2017 with a master’s degree in visual art and Choreography at ISAC and Académie des Beaux arts Brussels.
Her work, made up of performances and installations, seeks a vulnerable confrontation between the viewer’s gaze and the introspective, self-conscious eye. It explores the mechanisms going on behind the scenes of the visible body, often in relation to, and sometimes in tension with, external reality shaped by societal norms and expectations.
Delving into the complex interplay between psyche and body, focusing on the duality of control – holding and losing it. How the body opens up and the complexity of the inner world seeps out. Transforming subjective experience into tangible matter, as something to hold on to, a way of shaping and transforming back, looking at it, distancing from it. In doing so, the body is fragmented, distorted, enlarged, and pulled out of context, taking up space and sometimes even escaping from itself.

[FR] Leen Van Dommelen (BE, 1987) est une artiste visuelle et performeuse basée à Bruxelles. Elle a étudié la sculpture à La Cambre Bruxelles, et a obtenu en 2017 un master en art visuel et chorégraphie à l’ISAC et à l’Académie des Beaux-arts de Bruxelles.
Son travail, composé de performances et d’installations, recherche une confrontation vulnérable entre le regard du spectateur et l’œil introspectif et conscient de lui-même. Il explore les mécanismes qui se déroulent dans les coulisses du corps visible, souvent en relation, et parfois en tension, avec la réalité extérieure façonnée par les normes et les attentes de la société.
Il explore l’interaction complexe entre la psyché et le corps, en se concentrant sur la dualité du contrôle – le garder et le perdre. Comment le corps s’ouvre et la complexité du monde intérieur s’en échappe. Transformer l’expérience subjective en matière tangible, comme quelque chose à quoi s’accrocher, une manière de façonner et de transformer le retour, de le regarder, de s’en éloigner. Ce faisant, le corps est fragmenté, déformé, agrandi et sorti de son contexte, il prend de la place et parfois même s’échappe de lui-même.
