Shui-Lyn White

Shui-Lyn White is a painter & printmaker. Half english and half chinese, Shui-Lyn questions what it is to be present in the world and the role of memory and loss in how we inhabit the space called “self”. Her art practice is based on an authenticity of gesture that captures our most subliminal moves. She grew up in Nigeria surrounded by family histories of migration, exile and war that led her to question the societal fictions, myths and constructs of the self and to realise the importance of connection over belonging. Shui-Lyn’s work reflects her Sino-European-African heritage.

She lived in Ghana, England, France, Australia, Malawi, South Africa and Ethiopia and is currently based between Cape Town and Johannesburg. Shui-Lyn’s images emerge from a fusion of sensibilities and influences, experimenting between the figurative and the abstract, between profound minimalism and buoyant expressionism. In 2017, Shui-Lyn was selected by the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers for the Masters Exhibition at the Bankside Gallery in London.
